“When I was a student a teacher said, “you’re just thinking about how to jump but for ballet you have to think about flying away…” Ako Kondo.

Watch Ako Kondo demonstrate how she transforms into character in Melbourne’s magnificent tropical glasshouse; home to hundreds of native butterflies.

The 24-year old has been promoted to principal rank at The Australian Ballet.

Like all compelling productions it came as a surprise, the curtain didn’t fall after her final performance as Giselle last week, instead the announcement was made.

She’s the first Japanese dancer to take on the coveted role.
